New York restaurant Eleven Madison Park is officially the best restaurant in the world. Also adjudged the best restaurant in North America at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, held last week in a glittering ceremony in Melbourne, Daniel Humm’s trailblazing venue nudged last year’s topper Osteria Francescana down to second place, with venerated Spanish eatery El Cellar De Can Roca rounding up the top three.
Other notable winners included Gaggan, which was not only voted Asia’s best restaurant, but was at Number 7 on the global list; and Dan Barber’s Blue Hill at Stone Barns, which won the Highest Climber award to secure a spot at No.11. Several other awards were handed out on the night too, including a Lifetime Achievement trophy for Heston Blumenthal, and Slovenian Ana Ros being chosed the world’s Best Female Chef.
While no Middle Eastern restaurants made the cut this year (including in the previously announced 51-100 list), there was a Dubai connection for a couple of the winning chefs – Virgilio Martinez, who recently opened Lima Dubai, not only secured a No.5 spot for Central restaurant, he also won the Chef’s Choice award (look out for his interview in our May issue). Yannick Alleno, who is the man behind Stay at One & Only the Palm Dubai (and International Chef of the Year at our GCC awards) also debuted on the list at No.31 for Pavilion Ledoyen, also winning the Highest New Entry award.
The full lowdown from the event will be in our May issue.
